A Bath Spa teaching degree is hands-on from the outset. From your first year, you’ll be known as a Bath Spa Teacher, developing your knowledge, skills and understanding of teaching and learning in university and on school placements.

You’ll gain experience in at least two different schools and settings with children from a diverse cultural backgrounds and across the spectrum of needs.

In partnership with schools, our Bath Spa teachers become creative practitioners, critical thinkers, collaborative colleagues and professional teachers who care for and nurture the learners they teach.

Our innovative Primary Education degree with QTS enables you to gain a secure understanding of teaching across all subjects of the primary curriculum, whilst also developing more in-depth specialist knowledge of a core and foundation subject. In short, you’ll graduate as both a generalist and a specialist, making you highly employable.

This course is accredited by the Department for Education. Successful completion leads to the recommendation of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), the qualification required to teach in state schools in England.

Course Modules

Year one: Becoming a professional

You’ll be introduced to all subjects of the Primary curriculum, both core and foundation. You’ll begin to learn about professional practice, including curriculum, assessment and approaches to teaching and learning.

You’ll start to develop the necessary skills and professional behaviours for successful classroom delivery. In the semester two placement, you'll gradually take on increased responsibility for teaching groups, including part and whole lessons. You’ll also engage in two intensive training and practice weeks to allow you to focus on specific aspects of your practice in detail.

Year two: Building your practice

You’ll develop a deeper understanding of the curriculum and approaches to teaching and learning.

You’ll increase your teaching toolkit by learning about progression, assessment and how to how to support the diverse needs of children in the classroom.

Your second-year placement will give you an opportunity to embed your practice and take greater ownership of teaching and learning in your placement class. Our intensive training and practice weeks will focus on assessment and supporting language development.

Year three: Specialism and consolidation

You'll learn more broadly about teaching and assessment approaches, with a focus on developing your specialism in two subjects - one core and one foundation. You’ll explore current issues and priorities in subject areas across the primary age phase and start to explore what it means to be a subject leader.

You’ll also get plenty of support and advice from expert colleagues on applying for jobs and preparing for interviews so that you’re ready to apply for roles that interest you when they're advertised.

An extended placement in Semester two will support you in developing and extending your practice in preparation for future employment as an Early Career Teacher. The longer nature of the final placement, which is designed to consistently demonstrate the Teachers' Standards, means that your final semester will end towards the end of June.

You'll be assessed using various tasks and coursework. These may include portfolios, evidence of school-based practice, posters, reports, presentations, and quizzes to test your subject knowledge.

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
