What happens on the course?

The course is part of the School of Psychology in the Faculty of Education, Health, & Wellbeing.  The School of Psychology is the professional home to over 50 teaching and research staff, bringing a broad range of interests and experience to benefit students learning from our portfolio of courses.  Our School is recognised as one of the leading providers of Psychology education, using innovative teaching methods focusing on the application of scientific and theoretical principles to the study of people’s lives. Psychology staff are grouped into a variety of highly active research clusters through our Centre for Psychological Research, publishing in the latest academic journals and working to make a real-world impact on people’s lives.

Study scientific approaches to understanding the mind, motivation, and behaviour. Modules cover theories, principles, ethics, and applications in the real world. Areas of psychology cover include social, cognitive, health, clinical, and developmental psychologies, as well as the appropriate research methods.

At the start of your course, we support your transition into university by introducing study skills, time management, library skills, independent learning skills, and the core areas of psychological knowledge.

This framework for the study of the mind, emotion, motivation and behaviour will be underpinned by historical and scientific background knowledge, with early modules including core debates and key competencies in psychology, research methods and current issues in the field. Our curriculum provides transferable skills while setting the groundwork for later specialist knowledge.

Later in your course you will be able to choose a specialist area to research, learning from the experience of professionals in the field in the production of your research project. Final year modules cover psychology as applied to clinical, cyber, health, evolutionary psychology, and developmental and intellectual disability contexts.

If you choose to study part-time, you complete your course over 6 years and have a range of flexible options for your route through the programme. With our blended learning online content, students can manage workloads in the context of other home or work commitments.
