Literature and Theology

Most of our humanities subjects can be studied as joint honours as well as single honours. Joint honours programmes give you the opportunity to combine two subjects, which complement your interests or career goals. You will usually concentrate on both subjects equally. It can be possible to transfer between single and joint honours options, usually during your first or second year, and advice will be available from your personal academic tutor.

This course covers:

• Literature: using a wide range of authors and texts, from classic to contemporary, explores literature in a global context, looking in depth at language and literary history

• Theology: the study of the main disciplines of Christian theology

Please note this course is delivered entirely online and available to study from anywhere in the world. Applicants outwith Scotland including International, should apply to the UHI North, West and Hebrides study location.

Module outline

Year 1 - CertHE

You will study the following core modules:

• Theories of literature: an introduction

• Travellers in the wilderness: literature and the theme of exile

You will also choose two theological studies option modules, which may include:

• Introduction to systematic theology

• Jesus and the gospels

• Protestant Reformation

• The Pentateuch

You will also choose two option modules from our range of humanities and social science subjects.

You will choose two literature option modules, which may include:

• Heroic literature: epic from classical to contemporary

• Mediaeval literature: texts and contexts

• Theatrical powerplay: classical and Shakespearean tragedy

You will also choose two theological studies option modules, which may include:

• Early church history

• Exploring other faiths

• Old Testament prophets

• Pauline theology

• Person and work of Christ

You will also choose two further option modules from our range of humanities and social science subjects.

Year 3 - BA

Literature

You will choose three modules, which may include:

• Imagining new worlds: renaissance literature and thought (S2)

• Literary borrowings: adaptations and appropriations (S1)

• Nature writing and ecology (S2)

• Risk anything! The modernist short story (S1)

• Romantic genius: Scottish and European literature 1750-1830 (S1)

Theology

You will also choose three modules, which may include:

• Doctrine of God (S2)

• Hebrews (S1)

• Scottish church history (S1)

• Theological project (S1)

• Wisdom literature (S2)

Year 4 - BA (Hons)

You will complete a dissertation in theology OR literature. You will also study one option module from your chosen dissertation subject, plus three option modules from the other subject.

Theology option modules may include:

• Christian ethics

• Exploring Psalms

• Medieval church history

• Research in theology

Literature options may include:

• Apocalyptic fictions

• Avant-garde literature

• Metafiction: self-referential texts

• Satire: the art of attack
