Course summary

The foundation degree is a two year full-time course, leading to a qualification in therapeutic counselling.
The course is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). As such, this course is monitored by BACP and meets their training standards. You will need to complete 100 hours of counselling practice in a suitable placement in order to complete this course.

Counselling theory: looking critically at the ideas behind counselling
Counselling practice and professional issues: core ethical, equal opportunity, professional and practice issues, diversity and inclusion
Clinical practice: counselling placement
Personal development: developing self-awareness and understanding responses to others

Assessment method

The foundation degree is intended for those wishing to qualify as counsellors. You will need to complete 100-150 hours of supervised practice in a suitable counselling placement in order to gain a BACP accredited counselling qualification. Counselling practice needs to be a majority of face-to-face in person counselling with adults (minimum 51%) or children and young people (maximum 70%).
Students are required to have a minimum of 20 hours of personal therapy whilst on the course.
The course includes a 60 credit work-based learning module which is met through the counselling placement (notionally 600 hours learning).

Preference is given to those who complete Coleg Sir Gâr's Introducing Counselling Skills course. This is the BTEC Award. Others may gain entry but demand often makes this less likely. Admission is conditional on a satisfactory DBS check and references. All candidates will need to meet the Assessment of Readiness to Practice criteria of the college's counselling programme and BACP's entry criteria for counselling programmes. There are more applications than places and the closing date is normally 1st April or even earlier so apply early. Please note that there is also a course application form to complete and return.
