Course summary

Make an original, positive and lasting contribution to Russian studies. A PhD is an opportunity to expand upon your interests and expertise as part of an active research community making impact across the globe. Join us at the heart of Scotland’s capital and festival city.

The first lecture in Russian Studies was given at the University of Edinburgh in 1919, and Russian Studies was introduced as a degree programme in 1949. Today, our expertise covers a wide range of areas and cutting-edge approaches. It includes:

  • social, political and cultural perspectives on Russian language

  • transnational Russian culture

  • Russian and comparative literature

  • media, film studies and theatre studies

  • Russian-English translation and interpreting

Over the course of your PhD, you will complete an original body of work under the expert guidance of at least two supervisors. Your thesis will be around 80,000 words.

We are able to support PhD theses crossing boundaries between Russian studies and other disciplines, including:

  • linguistics

  • politics

Our programme includes access to skills training, including research methodologies specific to Russian studies. Our research collections, resources and facilities are outstanding.
