The first lecture in Russian Studies was given at the University of Edinburgh in 1919, and Russian Studies was introduced as a degree programme in 1949. Today, our expertise covers a wide range of areas and cutting-edge approaches. It includes:
social, political and cultural perspectives on Russian language
transnational Russian culture
Russian and comparative literature
media, film studies and theatre studies
Russian-English translation and interpreting
Over the course of your PhD, you will complete an original body of work under the expert guidance of at least two supervisors. Your thesis will be around 80,000 words.
We are able to support PhD theses crossing boundaries between Russian studies and other disciplines, including:
