Course summary

If you’re fascinated by how language works and enjoy understanding why people communicate the way they do, this degree gives you the perfect mix of theory and real‑world skills. At Manchester Met, you’ll study Linguistics - the scientific study of language - alongside teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), a hands‑on area of applied linguistics focussed on how people learn and use English. With us, you’ll explore how languages evolve, how they’re structured, how we acquire them, and how communication shapes our identities and everyday interactions.

TESOL adds a practical dimension to the course, helping you learn how to teach English effectively to learners from different backgrounds. You’ll be guided by experts who’ll introduce you to teaching approaches, language‑learning theories, and the complexities of the English language. You’ll also develop a deeper understanding of communication across cultures, which is essential for working in today’s global world.

A standout feature of this course is the opportunity to work towards the internationally recognised Trinity Cert TESOL qualification, one of only two globally accepted TESOL certificates. This qualification is a valuable boost if you’re thinking about teaching in the UK or abroad.

You’ll learn from academics involved in exciting real‑world research, including forensic linguistics, accent mapping and the implications of how language is used in policy documents, ensuring your knowledge is cutting‑edge and relevant. There’s also the option to take a placement or study abroad after your second year, helping you gain hands‑on experience and grow in confidence.

This course has a foundation year available.
