Risk is part of every decision, from global finance to everyday life. On this BSc Economics and Actuarial Science degree, you will learn how to measure, model and manage uncertainty, combining economic theory with mathematical and statistical techniques.
Southampton is the only UK university to offer this course, giving you a distinctive blend of skills that are highly valued in industries such as insurance, finance and risk management.
You will build a strong foundation in microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods, learning how to apply them to real-world challenges. From your first year, you will also gain hands-on experience using Bloomberg terminals in our Financial Laboratory (FinLab), working with the same tools used by professionals.
Accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), this degree can lead to exemptions from core professional exams, helping you take your first steps towards becoming a qualified actuary.

You can tailor your experience beyond the classroom by choosing to spend a year in employment, study abroad for a semester or take part in a Student Innovation Project, helping you build valuable experience for your future career.
You will study various topics covering the fundamental aspects of Economics and Actuarial Science.
You can choose between a number of 'pathways' through the degree, to reflect your background and interests. Module choices in year one depend on whether you have studied economics at A level.
Some of the modules you may study include Econometrics with Big Data; Stochastic Processes; Actuarial Mathematics.

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an equivalent standard to the A level applicant. As A level Mathematics is required for this programme, all equivalent qualifications also need an equivalent of A level Mathematics, grade A.
