Course summary

Discover all aspects of puppetry design and creation in this course that offers a significant, hands-on production role alongside workshops and other specialist tuition.

This course covers all aspects of puppetry design, including digital design and fabrication, and construction ranging from simple to complex mechanics. You’ll also explore puppeteering and a variety of different performance approaches.

Every year, we commission a significant design production that will form a core part of your training. You’ll take on a significant role in that production alongside school workshops and other specialist tuition in traditional puppet making techniques, sculpting, mould making, carving, weaving and state of the art contemporary techniques which includes using 3D printers, CNC machines and laser cutters.

The course ends with a public exhibition of your cohort’s work which includes an industry night for an invited audience of potential employers

During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

Instrument/specialisms

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements usually include a degree or equivalent qualification in an art and design related subject.

Selection is made on the basis of an interview and portfolio presentation.

We may consider applications from people without formal qualifications, if they have an exceptional level of practical ability and suitable portfolio content.
