Course summary

With around 70 per cent of land in the UK devoted to primary food production, agriculture continues to be the mainstay of the rural economy. However, in addition to the science and technology associated with animal and crop production, the modern farm manager must manage an increasingly diversified business and embrace a range of responsibilities for enhancing the environment, integrating production within the food chain and maintaining rural communities. Our agriculture courses give students a thorough understanding of modern agricultural production systems and the underlying scientific and technological principles. They will equip you to manage a sustainable agricultural business in the complex and dynamic rural economy. This is a very broad and challenging remit, and consequently the course is designed to develop a breadth of expertise across a range of sectors. All agriculture students share a common first year, studying the same modules, before continuing with agriculture or focusing on a specialism; this allows students to change course during the first year.

3 years (full-time) including a one-year work placement. A two year programme is available for applicants with at least two years, full-time relevant work experience. Please contact Admissions for further information on this option.

Assessment method

Assessment is via a balance of course work and examination. Weighting varies depending on course and year of study, but weighting is typically around 65 per cent on course work and 35 per cent on examination; this allows individuals to play to their strengths if they are better at course work than examinations or vice versa. Types of assignment include appraising production systems on the University farm, whole farm case studies, laboratory based analyses and literature based reviews. Format of assignments varies and includes written reports, essays, technical notes, presentations and oral examinations. Students receive written feedback on all course work to help them improve. In addition, first year students undertake examinations in two subjects at the end of the first term to enable them to gauge how they are progressing and feedback is provided on these exams. Staff are able to provide advice and guidance on revision, and many modules include revision sessions.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM

Please note these grades apply only to the new examined version of the Level 3 Extended Diploma which should be 1080 Guided Learning Hours. We do not accept the 720 GLH version as fully meeting our Level 3 entry requirements. For applicants taking a City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma, offers tend to be in the region of DMM Please note these grades apply only to the new examined (reformed) version of the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma which should be 1080 Guided Learning Hours. For the previous version of this course, the City and Guilds Level 3 Extended Diploma, we require grade M. We do not accept the 720 GLH version as fully meeting our Level 3 entry requirements. Access to HE Diploma - M: 30 credits P: 15 credits

Ideally the Access course should have some Science content.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 24 points

Pass with 24 overall. Must have some Science content.

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)

We accept the Welsh Baccalaureate as equivalent to a full A level. For further information please contact the Admissions team.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H2, H3, H3

1xB1 + 2xB2 under previous system

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants taking A levels must have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language, Maths and a Science. Applicants taking an Extended Diploma must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English Language, Maths and a Science. Where an applicant was not given access to GCSE Science, a BTEC level 2 in Science will be accepted as an alternative at a grade M. Confirmation will be required from the school/college that GCSE Science was not an option.

T Level - M

Accepted subject Agriculture, Land Management and Production Routes: Crop and Plant Production, Land-based Engineering, Livestock production Accepted subject Science Routes: Laboratory sciences, Food sciences

This 3 year course consists of 2 years on campus at a cost of £9,535 per year with a placement in year 2 which costs £1,905 (Fees for International students are £16,500.00 per year with a placement in year 2 which costs £3,848).
