Summary

Stories move between page and screen, shaping how we see the world. On this course, you will explore how film and literature work together to tell them.

You will study writing from early poetry to contemporary novels alongside cinema from Hollywood, Europe and beyond. By connecting these forms, you will examine how stories are created, adapted and understood across different media and cultures.

You will develop a critical eye across genres including film noir, horror, science fiction, documentary and animation, while exploring links with performance, music, science and philosophy.

As you progress, you will build skills in analysis, interpretation and communication, preparing you for careers across film, media and the wider creative industries.

Modules

Over the four years of this course, you will explore a broad range of modules in film analysis, cinema history, media theory, and technological innovations as well as storytelling across artforms and cultural contexts, from medieval travellers’ tales to contemporary fiction and environmental writing.

Year 1: Establish a strong foundation in film studies with core modules in film analysis, cinema history, poetic language and the novel.
Year 2: Explore early film and contemporary global cinema alongside optional modules.
Year 3: Year Abroad
Year 4: Undertake a dissertation on a topic of your choice in either Film or English alongside optional modules.

You will also have opportunities to tailor your learning through student-selected units and an elective placement. Module structure may vary to keep your learning up to date with medical advances.

Assessment method

On this course you will learn through a range of activities that may include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning (studying on your own).

You will be able to demonstrate what you have learnt through a variety of assessment methods, such as blogs, essays, individual and group projects, oral presentations and dissertations.

You’ll be supported by a personal academic tutor who will offer support and advice throughout your studies. You will also receive feedback throughout your course, enabling you to identify areas for improvement before your work is formally assessed.

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).

Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C)

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.

The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
