Course summary

The Science Foundation Year aims to prepare students with the fundamental skills and knowledge required for successful transition into degree-level study, which may open up exciting careers and further study opportunities. Students on the Science Foundation Year study a combination of core and subject specific modules as part of an integrated degree programme. The combination of modules studied is tailored to the needs of the degree programme that students wish to progress onto after successful completion of the foundation year. Following successful completion of the course, students will then progress onto a full degree programme.

Modules

Students on all foundation programmes study a combination of core and subject specific modules during the first year as part of an integrated degree programme. The combination of modules studied is tailored to the needs of the full degree programme that students wish to progress onto after successful completion of the foundation year. Students study three modules at the start of the programme, which aim to build a foundation in mathematics and introduce key study skills required for further study. Students study a further module which introduces fundamental aspects of a specific area of science relevant to the chosen foundation year programme. Students also study an integrative module which is aligned to the full degree programme which students' wish to progress onto upon successful completion of the Science Foundation Year.

Assessment method

The way students will be assessed on this course will vary for each module. It could include coursework, such as a dissertation or essay, written and practical exams, portfolio development, group work or presentations to name some examples. Throughout this degree, students may receive tuition from professors, senior lecturers, lecturers, researchers, practitioners, visiting experts or technicians, and they may be supported in their learning by other students.

UCAS Tariff - 72 points

From a minimum of 2 A Levels or equivalent to include a minimum of 72 points from a STEM subject.

A level - BC

To include a grade C from a STEM subject.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - MMP

From a STEM subject.

Access to HE Diploma

45 Level 3 credits with a minimum of 72 UCAS Tariff points from a STEM subject.

Scottish Higher

72 UCAS Tariff points to include a minimum of 3 Highers or a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers in STEM subject.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 24 points

To include a higher level grade 4 in a STEM subject.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants will also need at least three GCSEs at grade 4 or above, which must include English and Maths. Equivalent Level 2 qualifications may also be considered.

T Level - Pass (D or E)

To be in a STEM subject.

Additional fee information

For each course students may find that there are additional costs. These may be with regard to the specific clothing, materials or equipment required, depending on their subject area. Some courses offer the opportunity to take part in placements. When students are on an optional placement in the UK or overseas or studying abroad, they will be required to cover their own transport and accommodation and meals costs. Placements can range from a few weeks to a full year if students choose to undertake an optional sandwich year in industry. Students are encouraged to obtain placements in industry independently. Tutors may provide support and advice to students who require it during this process.

With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that students are required to read. However, students may prefer to purchase some of these for themselves and will therefore be responsible for this cost.
