This exciting top-up degree is the perfect next step for anyone with a Foundation Degree or Higher Education Diploma in a related subject. Whether you’re working in a nursery, school, community project, or as a childminder, this course will stretch your thinking and develop your professional expertise.
You’ll attend Grantham College one day each week, blending practical experience with academic learning. The course is packed with opportunities to reflect on your own practice, explore leadership, tackle real-world challenges, and carry out research that matters to you and your setting. You’ll engage with practitioner research, analyse key policies, and develop innovative approaches to child development, all whilst continuing your vital work in the sector. You’ll graduate ready to make a real difference in early childhood education.
Assessment is inclusive, developmental, and rooted in real-world practice. You’ll demonstrate your learning through essays, presentations, group discussions, analytical portfolios, reflective reports, and a substantial independent research project. All assessments are designed to help you connect theory with practice, build your academic confidence, and showcase your professional skills. Individual feedback and tutorial support are also embedded throughout the programme.
The following entry points are available for this course:
Typically, a minimum of one year’s experience in practice with a minimum of two days a week (minimum of 12 hours per week accumulating to 360 hours per year of study in a relevant role, either as an employee or a volunteer).
• In exceptional cases, it might be appropriate to recruit students directly from a Level 3 apprenticeship or other courses in which it can be demonstrated that there is a significant element of professional practice.
• Typically, a Level 3 Diploma, NVQs, access to HE programmes, subject/vocational qualifications, however, the course welcomes applicants with non-traditional Level 3 qualifications.
• We encourage applications from mature students and recognise that their experience or qualifications may differ from those mentioned previously. This is supported by the QAA Characteristics of Foundation Degrees (QAA, 2020, p.7), that states Universities should have “flexible admissions requirements, including the establishment of effective
procedures to assist applicants from diverse backgrounds who may be able to demonstrate their suitability for entry onto a foundation degree in a variety of ways.”
• Written support from the head teacher/workplace manager in which the applicant works or volunteers.
• Students must complete and submit a workplace agreement that sets out the tripartite partnership between the student, the setting and the University and clearly identifies the student holds a current DBS as a condition of enrolment.
