Course summary

Research activity within the department covers a wide range of topics in both pure and applied mathematics and many publications originate from this research for research degrees (PhD, PhD (with foundation phase), MPhil or MSc by Research). Applications are welcome from students wishing to undertake graduate study and research in the following broadly defined areas: Applied mathematics; pure mathematics; statistics. Supervision may also be available in other subject areas, according to the research interests of individual members of staff. We work over a wide range of specialised interests in the areas of pure mathematics (including algebra, geometry, analysis, number theory, stochastic analysis and probability), applied mathematics (including continuum mechanics, mathematical physics, mathematical biology, mathematical chemistry, continuum mechanics and stochastic analysis and mathematical finance), and statistics (including Bayesian statistics, big data analysis, biostatistics, medical statistics and health economics, financial statistics and econometrics, and nonparametric statistics).

A range of scholarships and studentships are available at postgraduate level. Some scholarships are funded by the University (such as the York Master's Opportunity Scholarship) and some are funded by Research Councils, alumni, businesses and charities. Please check with the provider for details.
