Course summary

Computer Science plays a key role in virtually every aspect of modern life, and this degree will give you the knowledge, experience and expertise for a wide range of careers in this exciting and rapidly developing field.

This five-year degree prepares you for highly specialised and dynamic careers. These might include software engineering, big data and data science, security analysis or emerging technologies and will distinguish you as a committed and knowledgeable Computer Scientist. The third year of this 5-year course with a Year in Industry will be spent on placement. You will have the opportunity to gain real-world industry experience and develop your employability skill set. We have a strong network of industry contacts, and you will receive dedicated support from our employability team, ranging from CV advice through to mock interviews.

Computer Science at Swansea University has an excellent reputation and major appeal to students from different countries and disciplines.

Our diverse academic team will develop your knowledge of fundamental computer science concepts and how they can be applied to solve real-world problems.

You will have access to dedicated computer laboratories and specialised equipment for projects, including Arduinos, smart home technologies and virtual reality headsets.

Modules

Course Modules

In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: Programming, Modelling Computing Systems, Introduction to Data Science, Concepts of Computer Science.

In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: Declarative Programming, Software Engineering, Database Systems, Algorithms, Automata and Formal Language Theory.

In Year 3, you will typically study areas including: Computer Science Project Specification and Development. You also undertake a Computer Science Project Implementation and Dissertation.

In Year 4, you undertake a Computer Science Industrial Placement Year.

In Year 5, you undertake a MSci Project.

Extended Project

We recognise the EPQ as an excellent indicator of success.

If you are predicted a Grade B or above in the EPQ, you will receive an offer with a one
grade reduction, to include your EPQ with a grade B.

Swansea University accepts the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales as fully equivalent to x1 A-Level.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)

Minimum of 390 points overall to include a minimum of 3 B1 passes in Higher/Honours paper (including Maths).

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (first teaching September 2015)

Requirements are for A Levels where you can substitute the same non-subject specific grade for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Level Core Grade.

English language requirements
