Overview
The BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science degree is designed to enable you to practice confidently, competently and safely in a variety of relevant clinical settings.
Equipping you with the skills and knowledge required to rise to the variety of challenges faced by Paramedics, you will be encouraged to show initiative, demonstrate critical thinking and work flexibly.
Studying alongside other student health professionals within the School of Nursing and Allied Health, you will develop vital communication and interprofessional skills to enhance your practice and patient care.
The programme will develop your theoretical knowledge and practical skills within both the university, via state of the art simulation and through a variety of clinical practice environments.
On successful completion of the course, you are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

    What does the course cover?
    You will study a range of modules including Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Disease, Interprofessional and Collaborative Practice and Evidence Based Healthcare. Modules covering clinical skills and specialist areas of practice including Trauma and Mental Health combine to cover all the components required to be eligible for registration as a paramedic.
    How will I be assessed?
    You will be assessed throughout the duration of the programme using a range of methods which will vary depending upon the module. Assessment methods may include:
    Objective Structured Clinical Skills Exams (OSCEs)
    Written assignments such as essays and case studies
    Exams (multiple choice, short/long answer)
    Portfolio completion
    Poster presentations
    Group work
    What careers could I consider?
    On successful completion of this course you will be eligible to apply for registration with the HCPC as a Paramedic*. You may choose to work in the NHS as part of an ambulance crew or in one of the many emerging roles such as a in a minor injuries unit or GP surgery.

Career options are also available outside of the NHS such as in the off-shore industry, remote medicine or the armed forces.

*Please be aware that a valid UK driving license is necessary including a C1 category for employment within an ambulance trust. Whilst it is not a requirement at this stage it is strongly recommended that you are working towards this during your course if you do not already hold one.

Entry Requirements
A-Level: Grade profile of BBC. To include a Science (Physics, Chemistry Biology, Human Biology, Sports Science or Physical Education).

BTEC: Grade profile of DMM. This can be achieved from either an Extended National Diploma (Sport and Exercise Science, Health Science, Applied Science or Health and Social Care preferred) or a combination of smaller BTEC qualifications.

T-levels: A T-level in Health or Science with an overall Merit grade.

Other Level 3 qualifications are also accepted for entry. Please contact the admissions team for further information.

Graduate Entry: A 2:2 or above in a related area will also be considered.

Plus:

GCSE/IGCSE English Language and Maths grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent

GCSE/IGCSE Biology or Human Biology grade 9-4/A*-C or equivalent

Applicants must have achieved these before commencing on the three year programme.

Applicants will also be required to be successful at a values based in person interview.

All applicants for professional health programmes must undergo additional screening to ensure their suitability. Screening includes assessment of disclosure and barring service (DBS) status; as well as occupational health checks. Occupational health assessments ensure that applicants are fit to fulfil the demands of placements. Please refer to the Newman University website for details.
Additional Funding

From September 2020 students studying Nursing BSc, Midwifery BSc, Physiotherapy BSc, Occupational Therapy BSc and Paramedic Science BSc will receive a non-repayable and non-means-tested payment of at least £5,000 a year, in addition to existing mainstream student support.

There will also be additional funding available on some prioritised courses. Additional funding will also be available for childcare and to support regional recruitment difficulties. Total additional funding could come to as much as £3,000 per year for some students.

The new funding will be offered to continuing students as well as new course entrants.

The new financial support is intended to provide additional funding and not to replace the maintenance loan.

This funding is made available by the government. Students are advised to check the latest information from the government to confirm their eligibility.

Additional entry requirements

Health Checks
As part of the Health Clearance Checks, you are required to provide information about your immunity and vaccination status for this course. Candidates must prove they have been immunised against Rubella, Tuberculosis and Hepatitis B. We strongly recommend that all successful applicants (unless exempt on medical grounds) receive a full course of COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations before commencing the course. Candidates must receive a satisfactory occupational health clearance before commencing the course.
