The Foundation year prepares students for university level study. Successful completion of our Foundation course permits access to any of our Art or Digital Media BA (Hons) or BDes (Hons) degree courses, which include Fashion, Fine Art, Furniture Design, Glass and Ceramics, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Paint and Print Making, Photography, Product Design, Sculpture and Environmental Art — The Foundation year begins with modules aimed at providing transferable study skills and then, in the second semester, gives students the opportunity to study more specialist modules, with a focus on various aspects of Arts and Digital Media.

Photography is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary practice with many histories, identities and dimensions. At the Wolverhampton School of Art (est. 1851), we explore these diverse legacies through contemporary practice and critical theory. The BA Photography philosophy is that images should be about something rather than of something and examines making images through practical assignments and a number of key photographic themes such as: identity and portraiture; place and location and narrative and performance. These assignments and themes are developed through six modules: Level 4 Recollections and Situations; Level 5 Interventions and Encounters and Level 6 Live and Show. The modules allow you to explore the relationships for example between photography and the self-portrait; studio image and fashion; our personal image in emotional photography in health and memory as well as interpretative recordings of landscapes, documentary and portraiture.

There are no qualification requirements for this course.

Prepare for Foundation Pathway: We will consider applicants who have not achieved level 3 qualifications if you have a keen interest in this subject area or hold relevant experience. To receive an offer through this route you will be required to successfully attend and pass a Prepare for Foundation event. This is a one-day programme which is designed to assess your keen interest or recent experience in the subject, through a written assessment and a variety of activities. During the event you will have the opportunity to ask questions, be introduced to studying a higher education foundation course and meet staff and fellow students.
