OVERVIEW
Have you got a passion for baking? Do you dream of becoming a chocolatier or patissier, or even starting your own baking business? From making artisan breads to working as a bakery technologist, our Bakery and Patisserie Technology degree will give you the skills and knowledge for a range of careers to help you flourish in this creative and highly competitive industry.
Developed in consultation with industry experts, our long-established bakery degree course will help you hone your practical skills and technical abilities, as well as giving you the business knowledge you need to compete. Learning in our industry standard bakeries and state-of-the-art Food Science and Innovation Suite, not only will you develop a strong scientific and technological understanding of the core processes involved in the baking industry, but also the managerial skills to help you succeed in senior management or as an entrepreneur.
You will be encouraged to boost your work-ready skills and experience on a work placement, with opportunities ranging from working with small artisan businesses to larger food producers and ingredient manufacturers. You will also benefit from our fantastic connections with major organisations in the bakery and confectionery industries, offering a wide variety of industry-related visits, guest lectures and further work opportunities.

FACILITIES
University College Birmingham is renowned for its outstanding food industry training facilities. Students on our bakery courses have access to our on-site baking and product development laboratories, hosting equipment such as high-speed pressure/vacuum mixers, specialist equipment for chocolate production and dough and flour rheology testing equipment. In addition, our Cakes and Bakes shop on campus sells a wide range of bread and baked goods made by our students.
You will also have use of our multi-million pound Food Science and Innovation Suite, featuring the latest food testing and diagnostic technology alongside a cutting-edge development kitchen and bespoke sensory evaluation room.

Consideration for advanced entry will be dependent on the modules of your previous course, and how well this matches to the content of the course you wish to transfer to at University College Birmingham. Where similar study is apparent, it may be possible for us to award Recognition of Previous Learning (RPL) and, therefore, advanced entry onto a course at UCB will be permitted. Please note; due to the nature of this process, all applications are considered on an individual basis.

University College BirminghamProsthetics for Film and Television, MAFrom 2016-2018 I studied Art, Photography and Psychology A-Levels at Princethorpe College, Rugby, and after not being too sure of what I wanted to study at university I decided to throw myself into full time employment. Moving cities during the pandemic was very strange, however I soon became very comfortable at The Maltings where I lived with the majority of my classmates. Alongside the masters degree, University College Birmingham gave me the opportunity to work for them as an intern in the Marketing Department as part of the masters internship bursary scheme, where my course is paid for in the form of 400 hours of work over the academic year (September-July), which has been a huge benefit for myself financially. I also work as a part time front of house team member at a restaurant in Birmingham city centre, I enjoy this job a lot as I get to interact with lots of different people, I also feel very accepted there as I am free to express myself with my piercings, tattoos and makeup. Level 3 qualifications are accepted at UCB for entrance, a minimum of 96 UCAS Tariff points will be required.

UCB will accept A Level in General Studies for this course and will also take into consideration applicants who are studying an extended project.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - MMM - MMP
This can be achieved from either an Extended Diploma or a combination of smaller BTEC qualifications.
Access to HE Diploma - D: 15 credits
You will need a minimum of 96 UCAS Tariff points.
A minimum of 15 Level 3 credits at Distinction.
Scottish Higher
You will need a minimum of 96 UCAS Tariff points
HNC (BTEC) - P
A relevant HNC or a foundation degree with 120 credits.

Additional fee information
UK:
If you are a UK student enrolling on a Foundation Degree or a BA/BSc at University College Birmingham in 2021/22, your fee for this academic year will be £9,250. A half year tuition fee is £4625.
This is a yearly fee, and will increase with inflation in subsequent years (in line with the government’s permitted rise).
If you are an English student studying your first higher education qualification, you can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company. You will not start repaying this loan until you leave the course and are earning over £25,000 a year.
If you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, you should apply to Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland, or SAAS. The loans and grants available to you will differ from those available from Student Finance England.
