Photonics is transforming how we communicate, sense and process information. From fibre optic networks to advanced optical devices, it sits at the heart of modern technology.
On this integrated master’s course, you will combine electronic engineering with specialist knowledge in photonics. You will learn how to design and fabricate optical fibres, light sources and detectors, while exploring how these technologies are applied in real-world systems.
Your learning is shaped by expertise from the Optoelectronics Research Centre, one of the world’s leading institutes in photonics. You will explore advanced topics such as optical communications, photonic materials and quantum devices, building the knowledge to work at the forefront of the field.

This four-year MEng programme has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your own interests.
During the first two years you will undertake a series of core modules, for example Circuits, Electronic Systems, Programming, Digital Systems and Devices, Fields, Forces and Materials, and Mathematics.
In your third and fourth years you can choose from a wide range of optional modules that reflect the specialist areas of electronic engineering that will take you to the leading edge of technology sought by industry. You will also work on an individual project with one of our research groups which will allow you to work at the frontier of knowledge.
