Course summary

The BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science joint honours degree at Lincoln offers a broad education in applied and pure mathematics, coupled with the opportunity to develop the analytical and problem-solving skills associated with computer science. With digital technologies driving advances in all aspects of the modern world, there is growing demand for graduates with these combined skills, in a wide range of sectors. Mathematics is at the foundation of many different areas, and the joint aspect of this programme provides students with the opportunity to access a higher level of understanding in both fields, as a combined effort.

Modules

Students have the opportunity to learn from, and work alongside, our team of academics who can support and encourage them to apply imagination, creativity and rigour to the solution of real-world problems. Individual and group projects during the course are designed to develop valuable transferable skills. The course is taught via lectures, problem solving classes, computer based classes and seminars. There is an average of 12 hours of contact study per week (additional student-managed independent study is required). In the first year students have the chance to benefit from an additional three hours per week of problem solving tutorials. During the first year of the programme, the School of Mathematics and Physics also runs a tutor system, providing one hour weekly tutor sessions in small groups. In the third year, students can select from a range of optional modules. For the most up to date module information, please visit the course page for this programme on our website. Timetabling arrangements may limit the availability of some optional modules to some students. As the options often reflect staff research interests, they may alter over time due to staff availability.

Assessment method

The way students will be assessed on this course will vary for each module. It could include coursework, such as a dissertation or essay, written and practical exams, portfolio development, group work or presentations to name some examples. Throughout this degree, students may receive tuition from professors, senior lecturers, lecturers, researchers, practitioners, visiting experts or technicians, and they may be supported in their learning by other students.

Qualification requirements

UCAS Tariff - 104 points

From a minimum of 2 A Levels or equivalent qualifications. To include 40 UCAS Tariff points from A Level Maths or equivalent qualification.

A level

104 UCAS points from a minimum of 2 A Levels or equivalent qualifications. To include a grade B from A Level Maths.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

BTEC qualifications will be considered provided a grade B is obtained in A Level Maths.

Access to HE Diploma

45 Level 3 credits with a minimum of 104 UCAS Tariff points, including 40 points from 15 credits in Maths and 15 credits in Physics

Scottish Higher

104 UCAS Tariff points to include 40 points from Advanced Highers in Maths and Physics. A combination of Highers and Advanced Highers accepted.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 28 points

To include a Higher Level 5 in Maths.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants will also need at least three GCSEs at grade 4 or above, which must include English and Maths. Equivalent Level 2 qualifications may also be considered.

T Level

T-level will be considered provided a grade B is obtained in A Level Maths.

The University accepts a wide range of qualifications as the basis for entry and will consider applicants who have a mix of qualifications.

We also consider applicants with extensive and relevant work experience and will give special individual consideration to those who do not meet the standard entry qualifications.

Additional fee information

For each course students may find that there are additional costs. These may be with regard to the specific clothing, materials or equipment required, depending on their subject area. Some courses provide opportunities for students to undertake field work or field trips. Where these are compulsory, the cost for the travel, accommodation and meals may be covered by the University and so is included in the fee. Where these are optional students will normally (unless stated otherwise) be required to pay their own transportation, accommodation and meal costs.

Some courses offer the opportunity to take part in placements. When students are on an optional placement in the UK or overseas or studying abroad, they will be required to cover their own transport and accommodation and meals costs. Placements can range from a few weeks to a full year if students choose to undertake an optional sandwich year in industry. Students are encouraged to obtain placements in industry independently. Tutors may provide support and advice to students who require it during this process.

With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that students are required to read. However, students may prefer to purchase some of these for themselves and will therefore be responsible for this cost.
