Chemistry with a Foundation Year

Explore ways in which the sciences help us understand the patterns, systems and structures shaping our world, while building the confidence and skills to succeed on an accredited undergraduate Chemistry degree.

This flexible, four-year programme provides a supportive route into university study enabling you to progress into either of our Chemistry degrees after the initial Foundation Year.

The Foundation Year leads to an exciting choice of challenging degrees in Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry. The flexibility we offer means you have the option to extend your degree by an additional year by switching to an MChem (subject to academic achievement) or choosing a degree with a professional placement or a year of study abroad.

Part of everyday life, chemistry is vital for tackling the world’s most urgent problems - from green technologies to developing new therapies to keep us healthy.

You’ll be introduced to core topics in chemistry and will have the opportunity to take a wide range of optional modules from green, sustainable chemistry and drug development to heterogeneous catalysis and engineering biosynthesis.

You can also choose to extend your degree, by adding a Placement Year Abroad, or a Year in Industry, subject to academic achievement; or enhance your CV with a summer research project working closely with our academic staff.

As a chemist, you will have varied career choices in the chemical or pharmaceutical industries, or options to apply your critical analysis and problem-solving skills to broader areas, such as education and finance.
