Course summary

Sustainable development is a crucial global agenda addressing the multiple crises facing the world today. It involves the establishment of equitable social and economic relations supporting the responsible use of environmental resources. Good governance is an integral component of this transformation.

This master's degree equips you with analytical skills and deepens your understanding of sustainable development in theory, policy and practice. You will develop a critical understanding of global governance issues, approaches and instruments that pertain to sustainable development, and gain skills to lead and manage change in a global environment, working for public, private and third-sector agencies.

This programme is a 24-month professional pathway, offering you a twelve-month (30-36 weeks) professional experience directly applicable to your studies.

What will you learn?
You will develop critical sustainability skills and knowledge that are increasingly in demand as sustainable development becomes a global priority. You will also build governance expertise, including policy evaluation and equity, diversity and inclusion, skills that are highly valued by intergovernmental organisations, governments and private sector employers.

You will explore how high-quality governance drives real change in tackling major global challenges such as poverty, climate change, food security and biodiversity loss.

You will gain hands-on experience through a 12-month placement with an external organisation, or by working on a practice-based project or consultancy challenge.

Past placements have included supporting local authority sustainability teams, helping third-sector organisations develop ESG strategies, working with environmental management teams in large businesses, and contributing to research projects with academic staff.

These experiences give you the opportunity to apply sustainability principles in real-life settings while developing essential skills such as problem-solving, communication, and conflict resolution.
