Course summary

Course overview:

High impact journalism has the power to change lives. Exposés such as the Post Office Horizon IT scandal and the Paradise Papers have made global headlines, sparked public outrage and changed government policy. Investigative stories start with journalists determined to dig beneath the daily news, to uncover wrong-doing and injustice.

Our industry-leading master’s will develop your knowledge and understanding of investigative journalism, with a focus on delivering legal, safe and ethically sound investigations of subjects that are in the public interest.

You will learn how to identify and develop ideas of areas to investigate, and how to use the most appropriate research techniques and latest data-driven methods. Throughout the course you will build resilience and tenacity, enabling you to make sound decisions when facing challenging situations.

A final investigative project demonstrates your abilities and can act as your calling card to the industry. Graduates have gone on to work for major news organisations in the UK and abroad, as well as specialist outlets including The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and Spotlight on Corruption.

Who is this for?

Offered on a full-time basis, this is a master’s degree aimed at maximising your chances of being employed as an investigative journalist or in an associated field. It emphasises the development of practical skills and professional attitudes, making it suitable for those without any prior experience in journalism. It is also suitable for those with industry experience but who do not necessarily hold the required academic qualifications.
