This course provides you with a carefully designed combination of theoretical study and practical experience, equipping you with all the skills and abilities you need to confidently work as a compassionate midwife.

A demanding profession with much responsibility, midwifery is an extremely popular career choice that provides diverse and rewarding opportunities. We will encourage you to develop the critical thinking and problem solving skills essential for midwifery professionals working in a constantly evolving area of healthcare.

Our innovative degree will support you in making a significant contribution to the health of women, their babies and their families. Midwifery is about caring and this intrinsic belief is inherent in the way in which midwifery is taught and practised. Caring is based on humanistic principles and a belief system that respects the wishes of women and their families. It includes recognition of the emotional and spiritual needs of women and families, as well as the physical, social and psychological nature of childbearing.

This is reflected in the philosophy adopted for midwifery, which serves to integrate both the art and science of the profession. The science of midwifery includes biological principles, research, methods of inquiry, decision making, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. Whilst the art of midwifery focuses on communication and the approach to delivering care, encompassing genuine caring, respect, sensitivity, and valuing the uniqueness of individuals in a culturally diverse society. As a student on the programme, you will gain a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of both the science and art of midwifery.

This degree will enable students to gain a Bachelor level Midwifery qualification and registration as a Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Students completing this programme will, through the provision of high quality educational experience, meet NMC requirements to realise their potential as autonomous, accountable professionals who provide safe and effective care for child bearing women and their babies.

You must have or be working towards:
- English language or Welsh language at GCSE grade B/6 or an equivalent (such as A-levels). If you require a Student visa, you must ensure your language qualification complies with UKVI requirements.
- four GCSEs at grade C/4 including Maths, and one science (from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), or equivalent qualifications (subject and grade).
You must meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) good health and character, and fitness to practice requirements. To do this, you will need to provide a statement of character as well as a UCAS reference.

For applicants taking the EPQ qualification, an A in the EPQ can be recognised to lower the entry requirements by a single grade. For example an AAB offer would be “AAB from 3 A levels or ABB from 3 A levels and a grade A in the EPQ”. Please note that any subject specific requirements must be met.

The Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate will be accepted in lieu of one A Level at the A Level grades specified, excluding any subject specific requirements.

You must also supply a personal statement that is relevant to the profession. If you are applying to more than one professional programme, you should email a bespoke personal statement for each programme to admissions@cardiff.ac.uk at the same time as submitting your application via UCAS. In your personal statement, you should demonstrate that you understand the profession, have an insight into the course itself, and describe any relevant work experience. Only one personal statement may be submitted for each programme.

You must meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) good health and character, and fitness to practice requirements.

We do not accept Critical Thinking, General Studies, Citizenship Studies, or other similar equivalent subjects.

We will accept a combination of BTEC subjects, A-levels, and other qualifications, subject to the course specific grade and subject requirements.

ENROLMENT CONDITIONS
Before starting your course, you will also need to complete an occupational health questionnaire, attend any subsequent appointments and receive all of the necessary vaccinations to undertake clinical placements safely. You must have a validated negative sample for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. This is arranged by the Occupational Health Department following commencement of the programme.

We won’t make an offer without an interview and no offers will be made until all interviews have taken place.

All applicants must meet the minimum requirements at Level 2 (typically GCSE) and Level 3 (typically A-level) in order to be eligible for consideration for interview. If you meet the minimum entry requirements your application will be give a numerical score based on your personal statement. Eligible applicants will be ranked according to this score and the top ranking applicants will be invited to interview.

Our interview process
We use the multiple mini interview (MMI) format, which is a series of short, carefully timed interview stations that you will rotate around in turn. The MMIs help us to determine if you:

  • can think on your feet
  • have thought about some of the issues that are important to the profession
  • can critically appraise information
  • can communicate ideas effectively.
    They also focus on exploring the personal qualities and attributes that are important to your future career development. These interviews allow us to meet you in person and assess information that isn’t always readily forthcoming in the application process—they aren’t intended to test the amount of prior knowledge you have about the subject or the profession.
