Course summary
Delivered in partnership with Scottish Ballet, the programme will equip you with the technical and artistic skills required by today’s professional dance companies.
Our BA Modern Ballet programme is designed to help you develop secure classical and contemporary dance techniques and prepare you for a professional career as a confident, versatile, and technically strong dancer. You will graduate with the skills required by professional companies and the ability to effectively communicate with artists, choreographers, and audiences.
The course is delivered in partnership with Scottish Ballet. This provides students with numerous opportunities to gain invaluable insight into professional life. You will work with the Scottish Ballet artistic team and dancers, and internationally acclaimed teachers and choreographers, including Artistic Director/CEO Christopher Hampson. In your final year, you will attend company class. Some students will have the opportunity to perform on main-stage company tours.

Important Audition Information
UK applicants will only be able to audition live in-person at one of our audition locations. If you are unable to attend a live audition, please contact us in the first instance for more information.
For UK auditions, there are two stages to audition: the preliminary round auditions will take place in Glasgow or London - you can choose where you would like to attend.
Auditions taking place overseas will only audition once, with the possibility of a follow up interview by the Head of Programme. The UK recall audition will only happen in Glasgow (or online for international applicants if unable to attend an in-person audition).
Please note, the international application deadline is the 31st March 2027. For UK applicants the application deadline is the 13th January 2027.

Principal study options
During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:

For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.

Course Modules
Year 1
Your first year of training will focus on developing a sound technical and artistic basis in both classical ballet and contemporary dance. This grounding will be enhanced by supporting subjects such as pas de deux, pointework, virtuosity, conditioning and contextual studies.
In repertoire classes, corps de ballet work and solos are introduced, and you will learn about creating new works in the ‘Introduction to Choreography’ module.
You will complete your 1st year with a performance in the annual show.
Year 2
You will focus on building upon the skills learned in the first year with more challenging technical and artistic work.
In repertoire, you will gain skills as a solo performer (in ballet and contemporary), including learning works from the classics. Choreographic skills are developed through the opportunity to collaborate with other departments and a commissioned choreographer to create a new piece.
You will have increased performance opportunities, including the ‘Piano and Dance’ festival and a more significant part in the Annual Performances.
You may also participate in exchange projects and international competitions.
Year 3
Your final year is a year of refinement of individual strengths, development of artistic and performance skills and preparation for auditions for professional employment.
All third-year students work alongside Scottish Ballet and other professional companies in company class. There are additional performance and touring opportunities with Scottish Ballet in mainstage tours. In recent years, these have included Cinders! (ch. Hampson), The Nutcracker (ch. Hampson), Emergence (ch. Pite), The Fairy’s Kiss (ch. MacMillan), Swan Lake (ch. Dawson) and Mayerling (ch. MacMillan).
The Solos Evening is a highlight for third years, and your training culminates in the Annual Graduation performances in your final term.

Additional entry requirements
- Audition
- In-person – Preliminary Audition You will be invited to a preliminary audition which will consist of a classical ballet class which will include barre work, centre and allegro. There will be a short pointe work section at the end of the class. The class will last approximately 90 minutes and will be taught by one of the RCS ballet staff and accompanied by a musician. In-person Recall Audition - The final audition will consist of: - a classical ballet class (including pointe work) - a contemporary class - a medical screening (carried out by a qualified physiotherapist) - an interview with members of the Programme Team Online submissions available for international applicants. Stage & Screen Scholarships
The School of Stage and Screen scholarships are awarded for a mixture of financial need and merit. Scholarships are applied for and awarded on an annual basis. If you are offered a place at the Conservatoire, you will be sent the relevant link to apply for a Scholarship.
