Course summary

Develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to inspire the next generation with the BA (Hons) Primary Teaching (Social Science) degree at the University of Chichester.

This highly regarded three-year programme prepares you to become a qualified primary school teacher, specialising in Key Stages 1 and 2 (ages 5–11). You’ll gain hands-on experience teaching across the full breadth of the National Curriculum, while exploring the latest research into how children learn and thrive.

At Chichester, teacher training is rooted in over 185 years of expertise, alongside TEF Gold for teaching excellence. You’ll be part of a supportive and values-driven community, where you’ll be encouraged to become an aspirational, reflective and inspiring educator.

Through a blend of university-based study and extensive school placements across the South East, you’ll build practical classroom confidence while developing a strong understanding of pedagogy, curriculum design and inclusive teaching. You’ll also explore key contemporary issues such as cognitive science, SEND, and the role of education in promoting equality, social justice and global citizenship.

The Social Sciences pathway offers the opportunity to engage with wider perspectives on education, society and childhood. You will explore topics such as diversity, inclusion, cultural awareness and the social contexts that shape children’s lives and learning experiences. This specialism supports you in becoming a reflective, socially aware practitioner who can respond to the needs of pupils from a wide range of backgrounds and contribute to an equitable and inclusive classroom environment.

By the time you graduate, you’ll not only be classroom-ready, but equipped with the passion and purpose to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives.
