Step towards success and complete your undergraduate studies with our Physical Education and Sports Coaching (BA Hons) Top-up Degree. This in-depth programme will further refine your sports coaching and teaching skills, allowing you to deliver sports sessions effectively. No matter your aims we’ll support your game plan.

Are you seeking a sports-related career as a coach, sports coordinator or physical education teaching assistant? Building on your existing knowledge, this course encourages you to develop your understanding and application of classroom activities, methods of assessment and use of technology for teaching purposes in preparation for progression.

With this programme, you’ll deepen your understanding of sports coaching and PE. You will undertake industry simulations and gain experience, with our excellent coaching links, to develop your teaching practices. Your final project will allow you to specialise, partner with schools or clubs and prepare for further study or employment.

In preparation for your career in the fast-paced sports industry, you’ll have plenty of coaching work opportunities with local sports organisations. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a three-week work placement in Örebro, Sweden or Vierumäki, Finland.

Modules may include:

Independent Research Project (40 credits)

This module is your opportunity to explore one topic in the field of Physical Education and Sports Coaching to create your own research project. Through independent study and research, you’ll develop your skills in managing an extended project as you explore subjects that relate to your own professional interests.

Philosophy of Teaching and Sports Coaching (40 credits)

Gain hands-on industry experience as you blend theory with real-world application of the philosophy of coaching and teaching. You’ll develop experience in coaching diverse groups, explore your own moral and ethical values, as well as asking the question of what it means to be an effective coach and educator.

Digital Education Development (20 credits)

Wonder how technology can be used to teach and coach the next generation? In this module you’ll explore the potential use of technology in classroom and practical settings and evaluate the success of technology in sports education.

Sports Business and Entrepreneurship (20 credits)

This module will explore the relationship between business and entrepreneurship and the sport or education sector. During this module, you’ll understand how to conduct market research, analyse success in business, as well as learning how to create tailored business plans and funding bids.

Assessment method

During your time on the course, you will be assessed through both written and practical assessment. Our assessment methods are tailored to simulate workplace assessment giving you the first-hand experience and skills needed to transition into employment.

Entry requirements

Foundation Degree: Pass on the second year of a foundation degree in a relevant subject.

HND: Pass grade in a relevant subject.

GCSE English (Desirable but not essential): English Language Grade 4 or above. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy are accepted in place of GCSEs. *GCSE English Language is normally required for candidates seeking to progress onto PGCE programmes following the top-up programme.

GCSE Maths (Desirable but not essential): Maths Grade 4 or above. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Numeracy are accepted in place of GCSEs *GCSE Maths is normally required for candidates seeking to progress onto PGCE programmes following the top-up programme.

Industry Experience: Full time students will need approximately 30 hours of voluntary or paid work in a suitable placement on-going throughout their study. (Support in sourcing a suitable placement can be given to students if required).

DBS checks: Students will also be required to complete the Disclosure and Barring Service process (DBS) prior to commencement on placement.

References: An appropriate reference required.

Additional Entry Requirements: It would be advantageous for candidates to have experience in coaching or delivering sport sessions to gain most value from the programme.

International qualifications: International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria.

IELTS: IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any component.

Mature applicants: University Centre Leeds welcomes applications from mature* applicants who may not have met the academic criteria, but who can demonstrate a wealth of experience in their chosen field. Candidates in this category and otherwise are likely to be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and may be asked to provide a portfolio of evidence to support their application.

RPL claims: The course structure actively supports claims for Recognition of Prior Certified Learning (RPCL) or Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL).
