Hispanic Studies with Italian

Hispanic Studies (75% of your degree) delivers advanced linguistic training and in-depth cultural expertise. You will study Spanish at beginners or advanced level alongside a further language or cultural module each semester. With an A level (or equivalent), you begin Catalan or Portuguese in year one; otherwise, from year two. In later years, you take Spanish language modules and specialist options spanning Iberian and Latin American literature, cinema and culture from medieval to modern periods. A Year Abroad consolidates fluency and equips you with the global competence, analytical skills and adaptability sought by employers in international careers.

The Italian component allows students to develop Italian language skills (whether from beginner or A level standard) to becoming a proficient user, as well as introducing them to practical, digital and mediation skills such as translation and interpreting. Students taking 25% Italian with the year abroad will also enhance their understanding of aspects of life and culture in Italy as well as developing their proficiency in the language, their intercultural and transnational awareness and communication abilities, and their practical and interpersonal employability skills.

Most Combined Degrees allow you to adapt the weighting of each by 25% after the first year, helping you to keep your options open. Please note, however, students studying either a Business or Economics pathway in combination with another subject cannot increase from 25% to 50% or from 50% to 75% and it is not possible to transfer from a 50% to 75% Law.
