Course summary

Mathematicians are in demand across industry, finance, science and the arts, bringing analytical skills and problem-solving strategies to a range of issues. This degree is our most flexible course within mathematics, making you highly employable. Core areas include pure and applied mathematics, statistics and operational research. You can add options from other areas such as economics, sciences or languages.

The core of the course is based on our BSc Mathematics degree and covers the foundations of algebra, calculus, number theory and statistics. You’ll investigate the applications of mathematics in a variety of contexts and use mathematical and statistical models.

As part of this course you’ll:

  • Develop your abilities in problem-solving, accurate calculation and logical argument

  • Be able to choose options from other subjects as well as specialise in actuarial and financial mathematics, operational research or statistics

  • Use our student centre, a dedicated learning and social space, exclusively for maths students

  • Use mathematical and computational packages such as Python and the statistics package R

  • Be able to take a minor subject to broaden your studies

You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops, by leading researchers in fields, such as group theory, the mathematics of nature and experimental design.

Southampton mathematics graduates are in great demand. Many employers look for graduates with strong problem-solving skills who can develop sound analytical arguments. Depending on your degree specialism, a wide range of career destinations are available including mathematician, statistician, actuary and financial analyst. Within 15 months of graduating our alumni earn on average £36,700 with over 97% in employment or further study (Graduate Outcomes 2022-23, published 2025).

Modules

This is the most flexible degree programme we offer. In each of the three years, alongside the core and optional mathematics modules, you have the chance to broaden your interests by studying subjects from outside mathematics, such as accountancy, economics, physics, computing, philosophy, languages, music or English.

You therefore have a chance to develop a range of mathematical and other skills that will serve you well in a very wide variety of careers. In addition, our Curriculum Innovation Programme offers our students the chance to take optional modules outside their core disciplines. This allows you to personalise your education, to develop new skills and knowledge for your future.

Scottish Higher

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

Extended Project - A

The University of Southampton values the Extended Project Qualification. Applicants taking the EPQ in addition to three A Levels may also be made an alternative offer one grade below the standard offer, conditional on an A grade in the EPQ.
