Course summary
Studying a Modern Language with Philosophy, Ethics and Religion will equip you with knowledge, language and transferable skills valued by employers in a global workplace. You will develop written (e.g. translation) and oral skills and cultural insights related to the chosen language. You will also gain a solid knowledge in a variety of religious, ethical and philosophical traditions - encompassing both analytical and continental philosophy, and religions of Eastern and Western tradition.
All language modules include written skills (e.g. translation and essay writing) and oral skills taught by a native speaker.
Optional modules available in modern languages allow you to gain insight into the cinema, literature, history, and culture of the country whose language you are studying.
Philosophy, Ethics and Religion will provide you with a range of complementary perspectives on key ideas that have shaped culture and thought, and how such ideas interrelate with religious thought.
There are also extra-curricular activities that will both boost your subject knowledge and allow you to get to know your fellow students. These include cultural and social events organised by student-run societies.
‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. If you don’t have the required qualifications for this degree-level course or are looking to re-enter education after time away from study, then a Foundation Year Programme might be the right choice for you. Qualification requirements
UCAS Tariff - 104 - 128 points
Level 3 qualifications can also be considered in conjunction with another qualification in a relevant Modern Language (e.g. A level or IB Higher). No Modern Language required for language-beginners' route. For those seeking to study Chinese, a demonstrable interest, but no prior knowledge required.
A level
Relevant modern language preferred (no language required for beginner's language route). General Studies and Key Skills not normally accepted.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM - DDM
We will also consider other BTEC qualifications in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Access to HE Diploma
Pass required. (Can be considered in conjunction with A level or IB Higher in relevant modern language.)
Scottish Higher
Minimum of 5 Scottish Highers - some subject specific grades/Advanced Highers may be required.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Pass required. Including grade H5 in relevant modern language. (No modern language required for language-beginners' pathway.)
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)
We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Extended Project
Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent. Please contact us for more information.

T Level
T Level qualifications are accepted on a case by case basis.
We allow you flexibility in meeting our entry requirements and accept a broad range of qualifications. We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas. Level 3 qualifications can be considered in conjunction with another qualification in relevant Modern Language ( e.g. A level, or IB Higher).

Additional fee information
On 4 December 2024 the Welsh Government confirmed that the tuition fee cap (the maximum tuition fee that regulated providers can charge to certain students on full-time undergraduate courses) will increase to £9,535 per year, subject to changes in the regulations by the Welsh Government.
