Course summary

This course is for individuals wishing to develop higher-level professional skills relevant to the electrical and electronic engineering sectors.

The programme team uses a combination of traditional classroom teaching, open learning and research-based experiential learning, laboratory experiments, demonstrations and practical sessions, using industry standard IT applications and group activities.

The course comprises core and specialist units, which are all mandatory. These units are:

  • 5006: Further Mathematics

  • 5009: Further PLCs

  • 5011: Industrial Power, Electronics and Storage

  • 5013: Embedded Systems

  • 5010: Further Electrical Machines and Drives

  • 5019: Further Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles

  • 5020: Utilisation of Electrical Power

  • 5002: Professional Engineering Management

This course is taught one day a week, normally over 30 weeks per academic year. The course duration is expected to be 18 months.

Typical qualification requirements

HNC (BTEC)

Applicants are required to have BTEC Level 4 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering for England (HTQ).

The HND qualifications offered from January 2026 are new (for England) versions introduced by BTEC. As a result, anyone wanting to accredit prior learning is advised to discuss this at the point of application.

Applications from students whose first language is not English are welcome. For International students we require evidence of proficiency in - English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading); the required minimum is IELTS (SELT) 6.0 overall (minimum 5.5 in all components).
