Course summary

Prepare for a specialist career in early years education, and discover a role that really makes a difference.

This route is suitable for people who currently work with young children at nursery age or in the early years of primary school who have an undergraduate degree in a related subject and permission from their employer to study and attend placements as necessary. The tuition fee is covered by a grant and employers are compensated for their release.

This part-time PGCE will support trainees to gain Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) and deliver high-quality early education. The course supports trainees to ensure all children have access to high standards of learning. It is awarded to graduates who have been judged to have met all the Teachers' Standards (Early Years) in practice from birth to five years old.

Modules

Assessment method

Assessment methods include essays, portfolios, presentations, and practical teaching in school. After being formally assessed against the national statutory requirements, you can be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.

The course provides an opportunity to gain Master's-level credits by submitting appropriate assignments.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Entry requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: An undergraduate (honours) degree at 2.2 or above in a relevant subject. In addition, you will need: GCSE Mathematics, GCSE English Language and GCSE Science at grade 4/C. Equivalent qualifications may be considered.
APPLICATION & SELECTION: Suitable applicants will be required to attend an interview/selection day and must currently be employed in an appropriate early years setting. Applicants will also be required to: provide an academic or professional reference; complete a Suitability Declaration; pass an Occupational Health check; and, pass an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
