English language and linguistics combines the study of the structure and meaning of the English language, past and present, to see what all this tells us about our culture, our society and ourselves. The study of history is the study of change and continuity in human society through time. Glasgow offers a wide-ranging programme from medieval to modern times. Our teaching draws on research expertise in Scottish, British, European, US and global history; slavery studies; gender history; and war, intelligence and genocide studies.

We created the world-leading Historical Thesaurus of English, a unique resource charting the semantic development of the huge and varied vocabulary of English, and we have dedicated laboratories for analysing spoken and written language.
