Course summary

This degree programme studies cinema and television as major forces of enjoyment and knowledge within modern culture. Sociology studies the ways that people organise their lives together, the constraints within which they do so, the patterns of their social behaviour, and the causes and consequences of social inequalities.

Why study this course at the University of Glasgow?

The lecturers in Film & Television Studies at Glasgow are leading researchers in their field, and they bring this expertise into their teaching. We have strong connections with Glasgow’s creative and cultural organisations, representatives of which contribute to our programme (eg talks from policymakers and screen practitioners on our core course Media & Cultural Policy). One of the distinctive features of our Sociology programme, commended by external examiners and by our graduates, is the combination of sociological, criminological and anthropological perspectives which we provide.

Career Prospects?

This programme is a valuable preparation for careers in various aspects of the media, arts and cultural industries as well as for non-media-related careers (eg teaching, public relations). Immediate job destinations for recent graduates include production coordinator for BBC Studios, PR assistant for a creative communications agency and diversity standards’ analyst for the British Film Institute. Older graduates have gone on to establish successful careers as TV producers, arts administrators, educators and leaders within non-profit organisations. This degree will prepare you for employment in a number of fields that require a sophisticated, critical and questioning understanding of the workings of society. Our graduates are now employed in the media, city councils, development agencies, market research, data analysis, charities, activist contexts and housing and education.

It's been quite a journey from the bustling streets of my hometown to the historic campus here in Scotland! Well, let’s just say I’m aiming for somewhere between a lab genius discovering the next big breakthrough and a science communicator who makes pharmacology sound cooler than it is (and trust me, it’s pretty cool).
