Discover how the human body works in health and disease. You'll learn to diagnose and fight diseases in our specialist labs on this biomedical science degree.
Prepare for a career in public health
With a degree in biomedical science, you can be part of the fight against critical public health issues such as cancer. The work of biomedical scientists has been crucial in the detection of global viruses, including COVID-19. They’ve also played a key role in the development of vaccines and the testing and development of drugs.
Accredited study
This industry-accredited degree will enable you to understand and explore advances in the field. This could include how biomedical science has helped in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of a variety of illnesses.
Choose your pathway
At the end of your first year of study, you could choose to continue your multidisciplinary studies and gain a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science. Alternatively, you could choose to study for a combined degree award by specialising in one of our specific pathways:
Medical Biochemistry Pathway
Medical Microbiology Pathway
Pharmacological Sciences Pathway
Molecular Biotechnology Pathway
We also offer the BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science course which you can apply for after your second year of study. If you're successful in your application for the applied route, you’ll complete a 45-week placement* in an NHS pathology laboratory after your second year. You’ll then return to the university to complete your final year, extending your duration of study to four years.
Hands-on experience
You’ll gain valuable work experience and training during your placement enabling you to complete an IBMS registration portfolio while you study. When successfully completed and verified, your portfolio will enable you to apply for entry onto the HCPC register as a Biomedical Scientist after graduating. You’ll be able to do this without the need for further training. Please note, placements may be limited so will be subject to availability.
Your route into training
This course is aligned to the criteria required to join the NHS Scientist Training Programme. The programme is a common route to becoming a clinical or healthcare scientist, so you’ll be prepared to pursue this option when you graduate.
