Course summary

Podcaster. Journalist. Novelist. Poet. Screenwriter. Whatever kind of writer you want to be, on this course you’ll gain the tools and training you need to take the first step in your professional writing career.

As you progress through your studies, you’ll have the chance to explore writing in a unique range of contexts, from screenwriting to the gaming industry to experimental visual texts and comic books, as well as the core mediums of poetry and the novel. It’s all geared towards your future writing career.

As an undergraduate creative writing student studying at Salford, you’ll also have access to the creative writing opportunities Manchester has to offer. You will become part of The Northern School of Writing at Salford, a community of students, writers and researchers bringing together students from across our artistic disciplines, working to enrich lives with literature and support independent publishers.

You will

  • Explore diverse creative writing forms, including experimental writing, playwriting, screenwriting, journalism, poetry and prose fiction

Year one
During your first year, you will complete five modules:

  • Essential Reporting

  • Digital and Social Media Reporting

  • Production Skills

  • Popular Fictions

  • The Writer's Practice

Year two
During your second year you will choose six of the following modules

  • Work Placement Module

  • Radio Podcasting and Features

  • Feature Writing

  • Television Genres

  • Comedy Writing and Performance

  • Digital Narrative Technologies

  • Researching and Planning a Novel

  • Writing Poetry in the 21st Century

  • Introduction to Children’s Literature

  • Playwriting

  • Introduction to Screenwriting

  • Analysing Media Texts

Year three
During your third year, you will complete one core module:

  • Final Portfolio

You will also choose five optional modules which may include those listed below:

  • Sequential Art (Comics and Graphic Novels)

  • Teaching Masterclass

  • Journalism and Public Relations

  • British Theatre Post-1950

  • New Departures: Reading and Writing Innovative Poetry

  • Biography: Tradition and Innovation

  • Visual Text

  • Transmedia Storyworlds

  • Scriptwriting for TV and Film

Assessment method

An important part of your creative writing degree is the opportunity to showcase your academic strengths in a variety of different ways. Your production and creative writing modules are typically assessed through creative work, with others evaluated through essays. There are no exams as part of this course.
