Course summary

BA (Hons) English (with a modern language) at Manchester Met invites you to step into a rich world of literature, language and creative expression. With us, you’ll explore drama, fiction and poetry from the 17th century right up to today, discovering how texts reflect the societies that produced them and how they continue to shape the world we live in.

As you progress, you’ll have the freedom to tailor your studies to the topics you’re most passionate about, from creative writing and film, to cultural theory or writing from places like the USA, Ireland, Africa, India and the Caribbean. You’ll learn from award winning writers, leading researchers and critics who bring their expertise, research, and fresh ideas to every class.

Manchester is a UNESCO City of Literature, and alongside your academic work, you’ll be part of a vibrant literary community, with access to readings, festivals, research events and opportunities to build your own creative network and gain inspiration. Whether you dream of a career in publishing, media, education, the arts or something completely different, this course helps you develop the creativity, communication and analytical skills that employers are looking for, and sets you up for a future full of possibility.

A defining feature of this course is the opportunity to study a modern language alongside your English modules. This not only enhances your communication skills but expands your cultural awareness, an essential advantage for careers in international organisations. You can choose from: French, Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, or Japanese.
