Our new MA in Theology and Mission (subject to validation by the University of Manchester) equips students to explore missional theology and practice in depth, to inform and enhance their own engagement in Christian mission today.
The programme is designed to stretch and develop students’ understanding of missional theology and missional practice by providing opportunities for in-depth academic scholarship and critical reflection on practice. It can be studied either on-campus at Cliff College or online, full-time or part-time, enabling students to learn in the way that best suits them.
The programme has two core units, Missional Theology and Missional Theology in Practice, which give students a strong foundation in themes, approaches and methods of mission and give them opportunities to practically apply and critically reflect on their learning. Students then choose from a range of optional units that develop and extend learning in subject areas of interest. Optional units include:
Christian Doctrine and Mission
Methodist & Wesleyan Identity and Mission
Leadership and Mission
Chaplaincy and Mission
Bible and Mission
Intergenerational Ministry and Mission
This MA programme can be studied full-time or part-time, on-campus or online. The full-time programme is taken over 18 months; the part-time programme is taken over three years. This makes it ideal both for those pursuing an academic vocation as well as for those currently involved in mission or ministry who need to combine their studies with existing church and/or mission commitments.
For admission to the any of the MA, PG Dip or PG Cert programmes, candidates must be able to satisfy the general admissions criteria in at least one of the following ways.
Standard entry applicants will possess a relevant UK undergraduate degree at a minimum level of 2:2 (Lower Second Class) Honours, or equivalent.
Non-standard entry applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis - please contact us for further details before submitting an application.
Those applicants who satisfy the eligibility criteria but do not have the required background in theological study (for example, a good qualification in another area of study) may be admitted to the Diploma with the possibility of progression to the MA, dependent on marks achieved, or may be required to complete additional study prior to admission.
For international students whose first language is not English, a successful pass at IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent is normally required. The minimum IELTS score in writing must be 6.5 and in all other categories of the academic test, the minimum score must be 6.0
