Course summary

The BEng Mechanical Engineering will give you an excellent grounding in the knowledge and experience of the most fundamental of all engineering disciplines, preparing you for a variety of careers in engineering, technology, business, and management.

We use a variety of teaching styles that reflect the diversity of topics covered in modern mechanical engineering, and you will develop the range of skills and expertise that a professional engineer must possess.

In addition to core (compulsory) units, the final year provides you with the opportunity of choosing specialist units. Moreover, the final year also features an individual project - you will undertake a major investigative project by yourself, which will require scientific experiments and investigations.

Modules

Assessment method

Most course units are assessed through an examination (at the end of the semester) and coursework which is undertaken throughout the year.Parts of the coursework are, in many instances, associated with practical laboratory sessions, whilst others may be based on problem sheets, reports etc.

A few subjects, for example Design, are assessed purely on coursework. For detailed information about how different subjects are assessed, please see the course unit specifications below.

Entry requirements

Typical qualification requirements

A level
A*A*A

A*A*A in Mathematics, Physics, and one other subject.

We are willing to consider applicants without Physics if they have studied Further Mathematics; applications will be considered on a case by case basis. A relevant science and technology subject is preferred as the third subject, but not essential. Relevant subjects include, but are not limited to: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Design Technology, Economics, Engineering, Further Mathematics, IT, Statistics.

If you are studying 4 or more A-Levels, we will make an offer on the subjects that are best suited to the course. Due to the popularity of this course, we may give preference to those with grades above our minimum entry requirements.

As practical skills are a crucial part of science education, you are required to pass the practical element of any Science A-Level taken. Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this will likely be made explicit in the offers received.

If you do not have the required grades or subjects you may want to consider our integrated foundation year.

Please check for specific GCSE/IGCSE subject entry requirements.

Access to HE Diploma

Given that it is not possible to meet our published offer conditions within an Access course, we would not recommend an Access course as the best way of preparing for our courses. However, we may consider applications from exceptional Access students on a case by case basis. Each application is considered individually. Applicants should contact the Admissions Office to discuss their particular circumstances.

As a guide, we typically require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall and at least 45 at Level 3) in an engineering related subject. 45 graded credits must be awarded at Level 3 at Distinction including 15 credits in Mathematics and 15 credits in Physics. We also require A Level Mathematics at Grade A*.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education. Typically, this is a minimum of five GCSEs/IGCSEs at grade A*/8 to B/6, including Mathematics and a science subject. English Language is required with a minimum grade of Grade C/4. GCSE/IGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/IGCSE English Language.
