About this course

On your three-year BSc Nursing (Mental Health) degree you'll develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide high-quality, evidence-based care to people and their families experiencing challenges to their mental health through an extensive range of placements, simulated practice in our specialist facilities, and clinical skills teaching by world-class educators and practitioners.

  • Learn from experienced registered nurses, people with lived experience and train in our modern facilities, as well as through placements in various healthcare settings, such as: early intervention teams, community mental health services, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) assessment clinics, child and adolescent mental health services, inpatient wards, mother and baby units (supporting postnatal mental health), and forensic mental health services.

Student support
You'll be supported from day one, both during your time studying on campus and during your placements, by your personal support network of academics: your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT), a senior tutor, and by your fellow students via initiatives like our excellent Student buddy scheme and the initiative of Schwartz Rounds designed to support health-care staff to deliver compassionate care by helping them to reflect on their work in groups of peers.

You'll graduate from this course with the opportunity to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse (Mental Health).

The NHS Learning Support Fund may assist your journey to becoming a registered healthcare professional. If you're a UK applicant you could be eligible for £5,000 per academic year, depending on your programme of study.

Year 1: Working in partnership in mental health nursing, integrating physical health and pharmacology.

Year 2: Exploring psychosocial interventions and supporting people with serious mental illness.

Assessment method

Throughout your degree you'll be supported to achieve your best in assessments by our vibrant Health Sciences community, your Personal Academic Tutor, and your Practice Mentor.

Assessments on this programme range from coursework, written and practical exams to projects. Assessment takes place throughout the course to ensure that you are reaching the right levels of attainment. Your practical skills will be assessed whist you are on placement and recorded by your Practice Mentor.

60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, of which 15 must be at Distinction and 30 credits at Merit. Must be Health or Science Based

Scottish Higher

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 28 points

Pass, with overall score of 28, with 14 points at Higher Level International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP): The University of Southampton accepts the IBCP for entry to their degree programmes, recognising the value of combining academic skills with practical skills, providing a solid preparation for university level work. Offers will be made on the individual components of the IBCP. Applicants not taking the full IBCP but presenting with a combination of a Level 3 vocational qualification and IB Certificates may still be considered. Offers will be made on the individual Diploma Course subject(s) and the career-related study qualification. The CP core will not form part of the offer. Where there is a subject pre-requisite(s), applicants will be required to study the subject(s) at Higher Level in the Diploma course subject and/or take a specified unit in the career-related study qualification. Applicants may also be asked to achieve a specific grade in those elements. Health or Healthcare Science – An overall Merit with grade C in the Core element and Merit in Supporting the Nursing Team Specialism

GCSEs: Minimum of GCSE Maths and English Language (A*-C or 4-9). GCSE Science (A*-C or 4-9) also required if not offered as a level 3 qualification. Certain GCSE equivalent qualifications will be considered.

FETAC / QQI Level 5 120 Credits: Pass in every module, with distinction essential in at least 4 modules including Human Growth and Development (or Biology), Anatomy and Physiology and Nursing Theory. Applicants are also required to hold Ordinary Maths and English at O4 or higher. Certain FETAC modules will be accepted in lieu of these.
