Course summary

The one year HND programme will introduce you to new materials,Trend Forecasting and design manufacturing. You will also develop methodologies for idea generation within the industry, the design cycle, analysis and testing. There is an emphasis on contemporary making skills for example,wood, metal jesmonite and resin.

The programme is delivered by design practitioners in studios in the purpose built South Bank Arts Centre.

The course will prepare you for a career as a creative designer and maker, in addition you will engage in contextual studies of British, European product design as well as design from various cultures. The course will always aim to develop portfolio building and professional practice to enhance individual student profiles to ensure that they have a basis for logical professional development/progression.

Students can progress to undertake a top-up year at university, to turn their HND into a degree. In addition, subsequent options might enable one to carry out MA or PhDs should this develop.

Examples of careers that the course could lead to –

Product Designer: Focuses on the creation of new products, considering functionality, aesthetics, and user experience.
CAD Designer: Uses computer-aided design software to create technical drawings and models of products.
Design Engineer: Combines design principles with engineering knowledge to develop products.
Furniture Designer: Specializes in designing furniture for residential, commercial, or industrial settings.
Interior and Spatial Designer: Focuses on the design of interior spaces, considering functionality, aesthetics, and user experience.
Salary scope will vary/change with time/experience/development.

B2 Professional Project

Projects vary but all cover five chief criteria: Contextual Knowledge, Ideas Generation and Development, Technical Knowledge and Skills, Professional Practice, and Communication.

Assessment method

You will be assessed through on-going course work-projects/continuous assessment.
