Law (International Legal Studies)

Law connects people, systems and ideas across borders. On this four-year LLB programme, you will combine a strong foundation in English law with the opportunity to study abroad, gaining a global perspective on legal practice.

At Southampton, ranked among the top 10 for Law and 6th in the UK for graduate prospects, you will explore how legal systems operate in different parts of the world and how this shapes international careers.

You will study the core subjects required for a qualifying law degree in your first two years, before spending a year at one of our global partner institutions. This experience will broaden your outlook, build your independence and deepen your understanding of law in a global context.

Your degree is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board, preparing you for a future as a solicitor or barrister, or for a wide range of careers beyond law.

Key features of the course

Study for a qualifying law degree recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board

Spend your third year at a global partner institution in destinations such as Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan or Singapore

Develop a global perspective by experiencing different legal systems and cultures

Gain practical experience by applying to shadow senior members of the judiciary in the High Court or Court of Appeal

Work alongside legal professionals in the Law Clinic, advising on areas such as housing, business and family law

Engage with leading research centres including the Stefan Cross Centre for Women, Equality and Law and the Institute of Maritime Law

Develop advocacy and communication skills through the Streetlaw programme and by taking part in mooting and negotiation competitions

Broaden your studies through optional modules and interdisciplinary learning

Student support

Your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) will support you throughout your time at Southampton, offering guidance on your studies, career planning and access to wellbeing services when needed. You will also be part of a supportive and connected Law School community.

Further information

You will spend your first two years building core legal knowledge, followed by a year abroad at one of our partner institutions. You will then return to Southampton for your final year, where you will choose optional modules and complete your dissertation.

You will also have access to excellent learning facilities, including extensive library collections across key areas of law and a wide range of electronic resources to support your studies.

On our International Legal Studies course you will have the opportunity to gain a rigorous legal education and study law in another country.

Some of the modules you may study include The Law of Torts; Commercial Conflict of Laws and International Litigation; and Globalisation and Law

Modules are assessed through exams and/or written assignments. Your dissertation also contributes to your final degree classification. You will receive feedback on your progress from your tutors and formative assessments will help you to identify areas for improvement.
