Course summary
Our Law with Modern Languages degree allows you to gain a solid grounding in Law whilst also studying a modern language (French, Spanish, German or Chinese).
A degree in Law and Modern Languages helps to develop practical competencies including research skills, an analytical mind, the ability to listen, form sound arguments, read and quickly process complex information. You can choose to study the language as a complete beginner or as an intermediate learner!
At Bangor University, we bring the study of law to life. Take part in mock trials, internal moots and benefit from a annual University careers fair.
This course not only meets the academic requirements for qualification as a barrister (Bar Standards Board compliant), but also provides essential knowledge for aspiring solicitors. Amongst an attractive array of modules, you can also choose vocational subjects tested in the Solicitors’ Qualifying Examinations (SQE) providing you with a gateway to professional training to become a solicitor.
Combining law with language skills can give you a distinct advantage when seeking work, not to mention significantly expand the boundaries of potential employers.
‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. UCAS Tariff - 112 - 136 points
A level
Relevant modern language preferred for modern languages main route. No language required for language-beginners' route. General Studies and Key Skills not accepted.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM - DDD
We will also consider other BTEC qualifications in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Access to HE Diploma
Can be considered in conjunction with grade C in A level or IB Higher in relevant modern language. No Language required for language-beginners' route.
Scottish Higher
Minimum of 5 Scottish Highers - some subject specific grades/Advanced Highers may be required.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Including grade H5 in relevant modern language - for modern languages main route. No language required for language-beginners' route.
Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)
We will accept this qualification in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications.
Extended Project
Points can include a relevant Extended Project (EPQ) but must include a minimum 2 full A-levels, or equivalent. Please contact us for more information.

T Level
T Level qualifications are accepted on a case by case basis.
This course accepts applications form those both with and without qualifications in a modern language. There is no language required for the language-beginners' pathway.
Please note: Prospective students should be aware that if they wish to practice as a solicitor or barrister following their university studies, they would need to meet the requirements of the Solicitors Regulation Authority or the Bar Standards Board to become qualified. This would include meeting requirements in relation to criminal offences and behaviour. Prospective students with a criminal conviction are advised to contact the relevant professional body for advice.
We allow you flexibility in meeting our entry requirements and accept a broad range of qualifications. We are happy to accept combinations of the qualifications listed above, as well as alternative Level 3 qualifications such as City & Guilds, Access and Cambridge Technical Diplomas. We also welcome applications from mature learners and/or those with other qualifications are considered on individual merit. Additional fee information
On 4 December 2024 the Welsh Government confirmed that the tuition fee cap (the maximum tuition fee that regulated providers can charge to certain students on full-time undergraduate courses) will increase to £9,535 per year, subject to changes in the regulations by the Welsh Government.
