Student life

Life at Harper is about so much more than just your studies — it’s about life experience, discovering talents and passions and stepping into a wide range of future careers. You just need to join us!

Take sport for instance. With our all-weather pitches, you can bet our Harper teams are either playing or training for something — no matter the conditions. But if sport isn’t your thing, there are plenty of on-campus hot spots to rest and relax! Take the Graze Café: the perfect place to grab a bacon butty (made from produce on our working farm) and a homemade brownie or two.

Big Wednesday afternoons are kept free so students can make the most of campus life. For sports, societies, catching up with friends, or simply taking a breather.

And when the day’s done, our Students’ Union brings the community together for a range of events, from low-key evenings in the Welly pub, club nights in The Barn, to organising city trips for shopping or nights out.

What's it like to live in West Midlands?
Check out our region guide

The West Midlands is made up of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire. Its main cities are Birmingham, Coventry, and Wolverhampton.

It’s the most diverse part of the country behind London, with a proud multicultural history, from the birth of Two-Tone music in Coventry – a combination of Caribbean ska and English punk – to the Balti curry, courtesy of Birmingham’s Pakistani community.

Once the heart of heavy industry and manufacturing, and the inspiration for Peaky Blinders, Birmingham is one of the youngest cities in Europe, with over 40% under 25 years old.

Campus and facilities

Here, learning happens in context. You might be handling livestock on our commercial farm, creating sustainable recipes in the Food Academy, suturing in the Veterinary Education Centre, or programming robots in our Digital Skills Hub at The Quad in Telford.

It’s a specialist university, with specialist facilities, all on a walkable, close-knit site at the countryside campus, where free parking is available to all students. This campus is surrounded by green space, walking routes, and quiet. But when you need a city fix, Telford is 20 minutes away, and Birmingham is under an hour by train or car.

In the heart of Telford lies our new location – at The Quad in Station Quarter. Close to bus and railway stations, as well as shopping, restaurants and entertainment in the Town Centre, the Quad is home to digitally-focused courses such as Robotics, Data Science and Digital Business, as well as professional short courses.
