Postgraduate fairs and open days

It's a good idea to visit universities to discuss your options in person. Open days and fairs are free and give you the chance to ask questions.

How can open days and fairs help?

These events give you the chance to:

  • find out which postgraduate options best match your ambitions and experience by talking with course representatives
  • register your interest in specific courses.

Many postgraduate open days and fairs have talks on funding, life as a postgraduate and other relevant topics.

Check university websites for details of open days and fairs.

Who should attend?

Going to a postgraduate fair or open day can help you if you’re:

  • an undergraduate considering your options after you graduate
  • a recent graduate or someone already in work who is wanting career development and to acquire additional skills and academic experience
  • a master's student who wants to learn more about doctorate level study.

Getting the most out of a fair or open day

  • Get hold of a copy of the programme and list of exhibitors from the event organiser. Before the day, research courses that interest you – note the times of any talks you feel might be helpful.
  • Prepare a couple of straightforward questions to ask the exhibitors, and practise your introductions. You’ll gain more from the conversations if you make some extra effort.

Don't be worried about following up on your meetings. Keep pen and notepad handy so you can make a brief note of who you spoke to.

Can't attend?

If you can't make the date of an open day or fair at a university you're really interested in applying to, don't panic — get in touch with them and see if they can arrange a visit on a different date for you.
