In this blog, Liz Lloyd, Careers Adviser RCDP, shares five practical ways teachers can support students through this moment, helping them stay calm, explore their options, and feel confident about what comes next.

1. Stay calm and reassuring

Shift the focus from what didn’t happen to what can happen. Reassure students there are many routes to success.

2. Explore alternatives

Students might want to reflect on their original five choices on their UCAS application and reconnect with them as a potential option, as we know many students choose to go back to one of these providers via Clearing. They can head to the UCAS Hub to explore Clearing, course options, and all the possible next steps – including a gap year, and apprenticeship opportunities.

3. Encourage conversations

Help students talk through their thoughts. Whether it’s with you, a careers adviser, or a parent, talking helps clarify what they really want next. Students can chat to lots of different universities or colleges before making a decision.

4. Signpost expert support

Remind students UCAS and the National Careers Service are here to help them, offering free, impartial advice to make informed decisions.

  • UCAS student line: 0371 468 0 468 (UK) or +44 330 3330 230 (international)
  • National Careers Service: 0800 100 900

5. Celebrate strengths and possibilities

Even if the results weren’t what they hoped for, remind students of their skills, interests, and potential. Focus on what’s next, not what’s lost.

With expert guidance from UCAS and the National Careers Service, teachers and advisers can play a vital role in helping students make informed decisions and discover new possibilities for their future.
