'I have no regrets about my decision'

School leaver programmes give you a direct route into the world of work. They allow you to learn new skills, meet new people, and earn a wage while you’re learning. Not sure if it’s the right path for you? Adam, from PwC, shares his story.

‘I joined PwC in September 2015, having completed my A levels that year. The School Leaver Programme allows you to have a full-time job, while also studying towards your professional qualifications – in my case, the ACA (Association of Chartered Accountants). So far, I have completed six exams out of the 15 required to qualify, which means I’ll become a Chartered Accountant at the age of 22, this September.

‘I currently work in Transaction Services, which is a very fast-paced area of the business. The work is varied, and things are changing all the time, creating lots of opportunities to learn. I am based in the Belfast office, however, I also work closely with our London team, so I’m able to regularly travel there for client meetings. This gives me the opportunity to gain fantastic real-life experiences, that I wouldn’t have had access to in a classroom or lecture theatre at uni.

‘Making the transition straight from school to a ‘9 – 5 job’ could, potentially, have been tricky, but I was given all the support and on-the-job training required to get up to speed very quickly. I certainly have no regrets about my decision to join PwC instead of going to university, and would recommend the school leaver programme to anyone seeking a challenging yet rewarding alternative.’
