Summary

As Principal Policy Adviser, Carys has been in the thick of the action when it comes to UCAS’ Where next? reports, delving into the mindsets of international applicants, as well as their experiences before, during and after their journey to UK higher education. During this session, Carys will be joined by a guest speaker to share the latest UCAS data, insights and reporting to enable advisers to better understand the current landscape, and how this can support the crucial work being done to inform and guide applicants.

Through the eyes of international applicants – what’s their mindset, and how might this change?

Drawing on UCAS’ latest research, this session will explore the mindset of international students.

It will discuss the findings of the 2022 report, Where Next? What influences the choices international students make? to highlight how the decision-making process starts as early as 11. We will also look at the role of key influencers, such as parents, and how motivation to study varies by domicile. For the latter, we’ll include early insight into a specific piece of research that’s underway at UCAS, looking at the mindset of Chinese applicants. This report won’t be published until July so this is an exciting change to get early previewed access into some of the findings – a must for anyone with an interest in the China market.

The session will then move onto understanding what’s at the forefront of the 2023 international applicant’s mind – with cost-of-living on the rise, is it all about the money? Or are international students more concerned with matters of course choice and employment prospects?

Finally, UCAS is projecting an 60% increase in international students by the end of the decade, signalling the ongoing attraction of UK HE. Therefore, we’ll conclude by asking, what does the upcoming uplift in demand for UK HE mean for international students? And, with competition on the rise, how can you support them in making their next steps?
