Summary

In an increasingly diverse and interconnected educational landscape, how can we move beyond surface-level understandings of identity to create truly inclusive spaces for our students and staff? Led by Professor Kendi Guantai, Dean for Culture and Inclusion, Lancaster University this interactive session invites participants to reflect on their own biases and assumptions by engaging with the African philosophy of Ubuntu* - “I am because we are.”

Using story-based approaches inspired by the ‘Living Library’, attendees will explore how Ubuntu can offer a deeper, more connected framework for dialogue around intersectionality, equity, and belonging. Through listening-centred techniques, participants will uncover how identity is not additive but reconstitutive - and how this perspective can reshape EDI strategies, teaching practices, and student support in schools and colleges.
