This course provides a comprehensive foundation in understanding and supporting individuals with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). It explores inclusive practices across educational and care settings, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to promote equity and participation for all learners.

Students engage with a range of modules covering topics such as child development, inclusive pedagogy, legislation and policy, communication strategies, and multi-agency collaboration. Practical placements and case studies enrich learning, offering real-world insights into inclusive education.
Designed to enhance career prospects, this course prepares graduates for roles in education, social care, and community support, and serves as a strong foundation for further study in teaching, psychology, or specialist SEND roles.

Year One, you will study:

• Developing Skills for Learning and Personal and Professional Development
• Introduction to and Historical Perspective of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
• Reflective Practice 1 (PDP)
• Introduction to reflective practice in the classroom and workplace
• The Inclusive Practitioner
• Working with Individuals with Sensory and/or Physical Disabilities
• Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) & Challenging Behaviours

Year Two, You will study:

· Contemporary Issues

· Understanding Autism

· Communication and Language Development

· Research Skills

· Mental Health Issues and the Impact on Children, Adolescents, and Their Families

· Reflective Practice 2 (PDP)

An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service(DBS) will be required for this course.
Institutions Own Test (IOT)
Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but can demonstrate appropriate industry or life experience will have their prior learning and skills taken into consideration during the admissions process. They may also be required to complete an aptitude assessment, which will be discussed and confirmed at interview. Equal consideration is also given to applicants who are currently in relevant employment and wish to study at Solihull College & University Centre. To be eligible, applicants should normally have a minimum of three years’ relevant work experience that demonstrates technical, managerial, or supervisory responsibilities. All applications must also be supported by a reference from the applicant’s line manager confirming their suitability for higher‑level study.

English language requirements

Students who are non-native English speakers, or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, but can demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to IELTS 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4, 5 or 6 qualification, will be considered as eligible to apply for the programme/course.
