Course summary

As an archaeology student at Nottingham, you will:

  • gain a critical understanding of archaeological methods and why they matter in today’s world

  • explore the development of human societies, from ancient times to the modern day, spanning Britain, Europe, the Mediterranean and beyond

  • develop practical skills that employers value – from analytical thinking and communication to teamwork and hands-on experience

  • complete 20 days of archaeological fieldwork, gaining real-world experience while balancing both theory and practice

  • support your studies in our specialist teaching and research laboratories for archaeological science, with the opportunity to work with the British Geological Survey and the University Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre

  • choose your own module path – from archaeological scientist to heritage research archaeologist, commercial archaeologist or a bit of everything

  • develop your creative and communication skills, with modules including Communicating the Past

  • collaborate with international students in our tri-campus ‘Silk Road’ module

Beginners are welcome on this course! You do not need any prior experience in archaeology – our year one modules are designed to give you a university-level foundation.

If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a Presessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course. Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK.   If you successfully complete your pre-sessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.  Please note: For pre-sessional English or one-year foundation courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations.
